Press coverage for the week ending 28 June 2009

The press continued to ponder whether now is a good time to take out a fixed-rate mortgage while the whole issue of graduates and how they can be helped on the housing ladder was also addressed. Melanie Bien, spokeswoman for Savills Private Finance, was quoted in a wide range of press articles, a couple of which are mentioned below.

The Sunday Times (28/06/2009) looked at how graduates are struggling to find jobs and pay off their debts. With regard to parents helping with the mortgage, Melanie Bien said: 'There are deals with deposits of 10 per cent or even 5 per cent, but the rates are a lot higher.' She added that parents were increasingly acting as guarantors.

The Sunday Times (28/06/2009) also looked at whether now is a good time to take out a fixed-rate mortgage. Melanie Bien said: 'If you're a homebuyer, or on an expensive variable rate, it's worth fixing now.'

CML figures point to slight thawing in availability of buy-to-let funding

Data issued by the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) has pointed to a slight thawing in the availability of funding for buy-to-let investors. Mortgages granted in the second quarter were up 13% on the first quarter and 15% higher than in the corresponding quarter of 2009.
