Press Coverage for the week ending 31 May 2009

The papers looked at what borrowers on their lender's standard variable rate should do next while elsewhere offset mortgages were examined. Melanie Bien, spokeswoman for Savills Private Finance commented on these issues, and others, during the week.

The Sunday Times (31/05/2009) looked at what borrowers on their lender's standard variable rate should do as many of these are much higher than base rate. Melanie Bien said: 'Anyone paying more than 3.5 per cent should remortgage now. Fixed rates won't go below that.'

The Daily Telegraph (26/05/2009) considered whether an offset mortgage was a good choice where your savings are offset against your mortgage to reduce the interest you pay. Melanie Bien said offset mortgages had 'soared in popularity' in recent years. 'Borrowers like the flexibility of retaining access to their savings while at the same time benefiting from paying less interest on their mortgage. It can be the ultimate in flexibility.'
